Four Roses Bourbon is the easygoing, everyday pour from the Four Roses Distillery in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. It is a Kentucky Straight Bourbon bottled at 80 proof, or 40% ABV. The whiskey rests for at least five years in new charred oak barrels before it goes into the bottle.
What makes Four Roses different is its recipe system. The distillery runs two mash bills, one with more rye than the other. It pairs them with five house yeast strains. That gives ten separate bourbons, and this bottle blends all ten of them together.
Pour a glass and you first notice soft floral notes with gentle spice and a little honey. The palate is crisp and fruity, with clear hints of pear and apple. The finish is smooth, long and pleasant, so you never feel rushed.
This bottle has a strong record with judges, too. It earned Double Gold at the 2022 San Francisco World Spirits Competition and the 2022 SIP Awards. In 2023 it took Gold at San Francisco, the New York International Spirits Competition, American Whiskey Masters and the Ascot Awards. Wine Enthusiast scored it 93 points and named it a Best Buy.
The brand dates back to the 1860s, and Paul Jones Jr. trademarked the name in 1888. Its Spanish Mission-style distillery, built in 1910, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Kirin of Japan has owned Four Roses since 2002.
