Two American rye whiskeys at cask strength. Same category, totally different geography, production method, and soul. That tension is exactly the point of this bundle — and for rye enthusiasts, it's about as interesting as a two-bottle pairing gets.
Old Stubborn's Single Barrel Rye comes from West Virginia, distilled on a pot still at a facility believed to be Smooth Ambler, and aged 12–13 years before Ed Bley hand-selected it. The pot still is the key differentiator. While the vast majority of American rye reaches the bottle via column distillation — a cleaner, more efficient process — pot stills retain the grain's full complement of oils and congeners, producing something heavier, rounder, and fundamentally different in texture. Then add 12+ years of West Virginia warehouse aging and cask strength bottling with minimal filtration, and you've got a rye that defies easy categorization. It's assertive without being aggressive. Dense without being sluggish.
Old Swagger 12 Year Cask Strength Rye takes the Indiana road. MGP's rye grain bill is legendary in the whiskey community — the source of countless acclaimed rye releases, it typically runs 95% rye or higher, with malted barley rounding out the mashbill. At 12 years, that grain intensity hasn't mellowed so much as deepened, with oak integration and dried fruit development adding dimension to what's already a characterful base. Bottled at cask strength without the Bottled-in-Bond constraints of the first Swagger release, this version gives you full proof, full flavor, full stop.
Put these two side by side and the differences in American rye's possibilities become vivid. One is rooted in tradition and terroir; the other is a masterclass in aging and grain. Both come from a man who's spent his career knowing exactly which barrels deserve a name on the label.
