This white wine originates from the United States, produced in the California region within the Carneros subregion that spans both Napa and Sonoma valleys. Rombauer Vineyards was founded in 1980 by Koerner and Joan Rombauer, and the estate released its first Chardonnay in 1984. In August 2023, the winery was acquired by E. & J. Gallo's Luxury Wine Group, though it remains a family-focused operation. The winemaking philosophy emphasizes producing 'California-style' wines that are bold and fruit-driven, specifically balancing rich fruit intensity with fresh, lively acidity.
Wine Description
The Rombauer Chardonnay presents a luminous straw-yellow colour. The nose is expressive and layered, offering aromas of ripe yellow peach, melon, and Meyer lemon interspersed with scents of chamomile, clove, and vanilla. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and concentrated, featuring flavours of tropical fruit, apricot, and baked apple integrated with notes of creamy vanilla and buttery brioche. It is characterized by its signature bright acidity and a rich, fleshy texture that leads into a long finish marked by hints of spice and pie crust.
Food Pairing
The rich texture and vibrant acidity of this Chardonnay make it a versatile partner for a variety of savoury dishes. It pairs beautifully with roasted poultry, such as chicken pot pie or roast chicken with potatoes, and seafood like dungeness crab rolls, lobster, and grilled salmon. It also complements creamy pasta dishes like fettuccine alfredo, mushroom risotto, and mild corn chowder. For a unique pairing, consider serving it with buttered popcorn or a caramelized pear filled with cheese fondue.
